BBC’s Luther

BBC’s Luther

Luther, on BBC and BBC America, is awesome. Series 1 (or, if you’re American, season 1) is currently on Netflix streaming and I strongly urge you to check it out. Like most British shows it’s only 6 episodes, so it’s not that much of a commitment. So what makes it awesome?

Primarily, Idris Elba as the title character. If you’ve seen him on the Wire or the Office then you know he’s got some serious range. In Luther, he’s a cop who’s coming unglued. His ex (kind of) is with some other guy, he’s constantly in danger of being fired, and he has some pretty serious mental issues. But this makes him a bad ass. Yes, it’s a procedural, but it’s really well done. In addition to Elba, the rest of the cast is great and the show moves at a brisk pace. Pretty much every episode feels like a season finale.

Series 2 of Luther starts soon. How soon? No clue. But soon (the DVD comes out at the end of June, so presumably before that). No idea when BBC America will air it, but last year they aired series 1 about 5 months later. It’ll be two two-hour episodes. They’ve released a teaser for it that contains pretty much everything you need to know about Luther, namely that it stars Edris Elba as an unhinged cop that likes destroying things. Check it out:
